The Best Sleep & Stress of 2026

We scored 7 sleep & stress products on efficacy, purity, value, experience and transparency — then read the labels, checked the certifications and watched the creator reviews so you don’t have to. Here’s how they rank.

Independent rankings — brands can’t pay for placement. How we score
1Best OverallSleep & Stress
Front of Nutricost KSM-66 Ashwagandha Root Extract 600 mg bottle, 60 capsules

This is a no-frills, correctly dosed KSM-66 product at one of the lowest prices in the category, which makes it our value pick for ashwagandha. The evidence for stress and sleep is encouraging but modest, and the safety caveats around thyroid, liver and pregnancy are real, so it is best treated as an eight-week trial with a clinician's okay rather than a permanent staple.

cGMP facilityThird-party tested

Why we like it

  • 600 mg KSM-66 per capsule, the dose range where a meta-analysis found stronger sleep effects
  • About $0.25-$0.28 per daily serving
  • Label discloses standardization: at least 5% withanolides and under 0.1% withaferin A

Keep in mind

  • Benefits build over weeks, and some buyers report no effect
  • Headaches reported by some buyers; not for pregnancy, with rare liver-injury reports and possible thyroid effects

2Sleep & Stress
Front of Sports Research L-Theanine 200 mg with Suntheanine bottle, 60 softgels

This is an easy recommendation for anyone who wants to try L-theanine: a studied dose of a branded ingredient, a transparent label and consistently strong buyer feedback. Expect subtle calm rather than a knockout effect, and choose a capsule version if you avoid gelatin or coconut.

Third-party testedcGMP facility

Why we like it

  • 200 mg Suntheanine per softgel, matching the dose used in a 2019 randomized trial
  • Single active ingredient with a short, fully disclosed label
  • Third-party tested, cGMP-compliant, gluten-free and IGEN Non-GMO tested

Keep in mind

  • Gelatin softgel is not suitable for vegetarians; label lists coconut as a tree-nut allergen
  • Some buyers report stomach upset, and the softgels are on the larger side

3Best ValueSleep & Stress
Front of Natrol Melatonin 5 mg Fast Dissolve Tablets bottle, strawberry flavor, 90 count

Natrol Fast Dissolve is an inexpensive, transparent and pleasant way to take melatonin, and buyers largely report that it helps them fall asleep. Our reservation is the dose: 5 mg is more than most adults need, so we would start with Natrol's 1 mg or 3 mg tablets and only move up if a lower dose does nothing. Skip it if you avoid wheat or soy.

cGMP facilityThird-party tested

Why we like it

  • About $0.11 per tablet at the brand's list price for 150 count
  • Single-ingredient formula with no proprietary blend
  • Dissolves in the mouth without water; buyers consistently praise the strawberry taste

Keep in mind

  • 5 mg is above the 1-3 mg range sleep experts commonly suggest; headaches are the side effect buyers mention most
  • Label lists wheat and soy, so it is unsuitable for celiac disease or soy allergy

4Most ViralSleep & Stress
Front of OLLY Sleep Blackberry Zen gummies bottle, 50 count

OLLY Sleep is a well-made, third-party certified melatonin gummy with a reasonable 3 mg dose, and most buyers find it pleasant and effective. The L-theanine and herbal extracts are too small to add much, so you are mainly paying for melatonin in a tasty, convenient form at several times the price of a basic tablet.

NSF Contents Certified

Why we like it

  • 3 mg melatonin per serving, within the range sleep experts commonly suggest
  • Listed in NSF's certified dietary supplement database for label accuracy and contaminants
  • Every ingredient amount disclosed, with no proprietary blend

Keep in mind

  • L-theanine (50 mg) and botanicals (16-17 mg each) are far below studied doses
  • About $0.56 per serving at the brand's list price, roughly five times a basic melatonin tablet

5Sleep & Stress
Front of Life Extension Neuro-Mag Magnesium L-Threonate bottle, 90 vegetarian capsules
7.2
Mixed

Neuro-Mag is a clean, accurately dosed version of Magtein from an established brand, and many buyers say it helps them sleep and think more clearly. The research behind magnesium L-threonate for sleep is still small and industry-funded, so we see it as a reasonable but expensive experiment rather than a proven sleep aid. If you simply want more magnesium, cheaper forms deliver more of the mineral per dollar.

cGMP facilityThird-party tested

Why we like it

  • 2,000 mg Magtein per serving, the same daily dose used in the most recent clinical trial
  • Single-ingredient formula with a full, simple label
  • 144 mg elemental magnesium stays well below the 350 mg supplemental upper limit

Keep in mind

  • Sleep evidence rests on two small, industry-funded trials with mixed objective results
  • About $1.05 per serving at list price, several times the cost of magnesium glycinate

6Sleep & Stress
Front of Beam Dream night-time sleep powder pouch
6.7
Mixed

Beam Dream is a genuinely pleasant way to take a reasonable dose of melatonin and L-theanine, and many people clearly enjoy the ritual. But the reishi, apigenin and magnesium add little proven benefit, buyer ratings are mixed, and the price is steep, so we rate it as an overhyped, if well-formulated, treat. Buy it for the cocoa, not for miracle sleep.

Third-party testedcGMP facility

Why we like it

  • 3 mg melatonin and 300 mg L-theanine, both within commonly studied ranges
  • Only 15 calories per serving with no added sugar; creators consistently praise the taste
  • Lot-coded with third-party lab results searchable by lot number

Keep in mind

  • About $1.83-$2.17 per serving, many times the cost of the key ingredients as pills
  • Reishi, apigenin and 60 mg of magnesium add little proven sleep benefit

7Sleep & Stress
Front of Moon Juice Magnesi-Om Berry Calm magnesium powder jar

Moon Juice

Magnesi-Om

6.5
Mixed

Magnesi-Om is a pleasant, transparent and third-party tested drink mix, and some people clearly love it as a nightly ritual. But its magnesium is mostly citrate, the evidence for magnesium and sleep is weak, and the price is steep, so we see it as an overhyped, overpriced option rather than a sleep solution. If you want to try magnesium for sleep, a much cheaper magnesium glycinate is a better first step.

Third-party tested

Why we like it

  • Clearly disclosed dose of each magnesium form plus 112 mg L-theanine
  • Sugar-free, monk-fruit sweetened; buyers consistently praise the taste
  • Finished product retested by a third-party lab to California Prop 65 limits

Keep in mind

  • About $1.47 per serving at list price, far more than comparable magnesium
  • Two-thirds of the magnesium is citrate, and stomach pain and cramping are recurring buyer complaints

FAQ

How much melatonin should I take?
Less than many labels suggest. Doses of 0.1-0.3 mg can raise blood melatonin into the normal nighttime range, and in a trial of adults over 50 with insomnia, 0.3 mg restored sleep efficiency while 3 mg lowered body temperature and kept melatonin elevated into the daytime. Starting low and taking it at the same time before a set bedtime is sensible; ask a clinician before going higher.
Can I take melatonin every night?
Short-term use appears safe for most people, according to the NIH's National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, but long-term safety data are lacking. People with epilepsy or taking blood thinners need medical supervision, research in pregnancy and breastfeeding is lacking, and older adults may feel drowsy the next day. If you need help most nights for weeks, ask a clinician about CBT-I.
Is melatonin safe for children?
Talk to a pediatrician first. Short studies suggest melatonin can help some children with specific conditions fall asleep faster, but the right dose, timing and long-term effects are unclear. Reports of melatonin ingestions by children and teens to US poison control centers rose 530% from 2012 to 2021, and the rise in hospitalizations was driven mainly by unintentional ingestions in children 5 and younger, so store gummies out of reach.
Who should avoid ashwagandha?
NCCIH advises avoiding ashwagandha during pregnancy and while breastfeeding, and says it is not recommended for people with thyroid or autoimmune disorders, anyone about to have surgery, or people with hormone-sensitive prostate cancer. It may interact with medicines for diabetes, blood pressure, seizures and thyroid conditions, as well as sedatives and immunosuppressants. Stop taking it and see a doctor if you develop jaundice, itching or nausea.
Do magnesium and L-theanine help with sleep?
Modestly, at best. A 2021 meta-analysis of three small trials in older adults found magnesium cut the time to fall asleep by about 17 minutes, but rated the evidence low to very low quality. A 2025 systematic review of 13 L-theanine trials concluded that 200-450 mg a day appears to support sleep. Many blends and gummies contain far less than these amounts, so check the dose per serving.
