Pros and cons

Magnesi-Om

  • Clearly disclosed dose of each magnesium form plus 112 mg L-theanine
  • Sugar-free, monk-fruit sweetened; buyers consistently praise the taste
  • Finished product retested by a third-party lab to California Prop 65 limits
  • Several flavors plus an unflavored 'Naked' version
  • About $1.47 per serving at list price, far more than comparable magnesium
  • Two-thirds of the magnesium is citrate, and stomach pain and cramping are recurring buyer complaints
  • 310 mg is close to the 350 mg daily upper limit for supplemental magnesium
  • Sleep evidence for magnesium is weak, and L-theanine is below studied doses

KSM-66 Ashwagandha Root Extract 600 mg

  • 600 mg KSM-66 per capsule, the dose range where a meta-analysis found stronger sleep effects
  • About $0.25-$0.28 per daily serving
  • Label discloses standardization: at least 5% withanolides and under 0.1% withaferin A
  • Organic KSM-66 in a vegetarian capsule; non-GMO and gluten-free
  • Benefits build over weeks, and some buyers report no effect
  • Headaches reported by some buyers; not for pregnancy, with rare liver-injury reports and possible thyroid effects
  • No NSF, Informed Choice or similar product certification despite third-party testing claims

Our verdicts

Magnesi-Om

Magnesi-Om is a pleasant, transparent and third-party tested drink mix, and some people clearly love it as a nightly ritual. But its magnesium is mostly citrate, the evidence for magnesium and sleep is weak, and the price is steep, so we see it as an overhyped, overpriced option rather than a sleep solution. If you want to try magnesium for sleep, a much cheaper magnesium glycinate is a better first step.

KSM-66 Ashwagandha Root Extract 600 mg

This is a no-frills, correctly dosed KSM-66 product at one of the lowest prices in the category, which makes it our value pick for ashwagandha. The evidence for stress and sleep is encouraging but modest, and the safety caveats around thyroid, liver and pregnancy are real, so it is best treated as an eight-week trial with a clinician's okay rather than a permanent staple.
