Pros and cons

Prenatal Multi + DHA Softgels

  • 800 mcg folic acid, 27 mg iron and 150 mcg iodine, matching USPSTF, RDA and American Thyroid Association targets
  • 200 mg DHA plus 60 mg EPA from fish oil in the same softgel
  • USP Verified, with lot-by-lot heavy-metal testing described by the brand
  • About 19 to 40 cents a day, depending on bottle size and retailer
  • Vitamin A comes entirely from beta-carotene, with no preformed retinol
  • No choline, despite a 450 mg Adequate Intake in pregnancy
  • Only 150 mg calcium and 45 mg magnesium, and no selenium or copper
  • The orange scent divides buyers, and some batches drew fishy-smell complaints
  • Contains gelatin and fish oil, so it is not vegetarian

Essential for Women 18+

  • USP Verified and Non-GMO Project Verified, with suppliers and manufacturing sites disclosed for each ingredient
  • 330 mg of vegan DHA from algae, rare in a multivitamin
  • Active forms: methylfolate, methylcobalamin, ferrous bisglycinate and vitamin K2 as MK-7
  • A published randomized trial showed higher vitamin D, folate and omega-3 blood levels after 12 weeks
  • Only nine nutrients: no iodine, zinc, selenium, vitamin A, C or B6
  • About $1.10 to $1.25 per day, expensive for the nutrient count
  • Fishy burps and aftertaste are a recurring complaint despite the scent tab
  • 8 mg of iron is under half the RDA for women 19 to 50, yet unnecessary for women who don't need iron

Our verdicts

Prenatal Multi + DHA Softgels

Nature Made Prenatal Multi + DHA covers the essentials of a prenatal, folic acid, iron, iodine, vitamin D and 200 mg of DHA, with USP verification and one of the lowest daily costs in the category. Its shortcomings are the missing choline, minimal calcium and magnesium, and a scent that many pregnant buyers find hard to tolerate. It is a sound budget choice if you add choline-rich foods or a separate choline supplement and review your plan with your clinician.

Essential for Women 18+

Ritual's traceability and USP verification are genuinely best in class, and its own trial shows the vitamin D, folate and DHA doses raise blood levels. But at $33 or more a month you get nine nutrients, with no iodine or zinc and under half the iron most menstruating women need. It works better as a convenient vitamin D plus DHA supplement than as a complete multivitamin.
