Pros and cons

Iron Bisglycinate

  • Iron amino-acid chelate, a form NIH says may cause fewer GI side effects
  • NSF Certified for Sport
  • 25 mg dose sits below the 45 mg upper limit
  • Small 18 mm capsule with a short ingredient list
  • About $0.27 per day, more than generic ferrous sulfate
  • Some users still report nausea on an empty stomach
  • No vitamin C or other cofactors included
  • Not appropriate without a confirmed need for iron

Magnesium Complex

  • Listed under NSF/ANSI 173 contents certification, so label accuracy and contaminants are independently checked
  • One capsule a day, and a 90-count bottle lasts three months
  • About 33 cents per capsule at the brand's current price
  • Short excipient list: a vegetable capsule, a standard filler and flow agents, with no colors or sweeteners
  • Buyers frequently report calmer evenings and fewer muscle cramps within two weeks
  • Amounts of the eight forms are not disclosed, and poorly absorbed magnesium oxide is listed first
  • 500 mg per capsule exceeds NIH's 350 mg upper limit for supplemental magnesium, raising the odds of loose stools
  • Large capsules that some buyers find hard to swallow
  • Counterfeit listings and look-alike sites using the Toplux name describe different formulas

Our verdicts

Iron Bisglycinate

If you have documented low iron and struggle with conventional iron pills, this is one of the best-tolerated and best-verified options available, at a fair premium. It is not something to take without a reason: check ferritin first, and space it from calcium, thyroid medication and zinc.

Magnesium Complex

Toplux earns its NSF contents certification, and one capsule a day is easy, which helps explain its loyal following. The eight-form story is mostly marketing, though: amounts are undisclosed, oxide leads the list, and 500 mg exceeds the supplemental upper limit. If you want a gentle, well-absorbed magnesium for sleep or stress, a glycinate or citrate product with a disclosed dose is the better buy; if you tolerate magnesium well and value the certification, Toplux is a reasonable but overhyped choice.
