Independent rankings — brands can’t pay for placement. How we score
1Best OverallHair, Skin & Nails
Front of Viviscal Hair Growth Supplement 60-tablet box
7.0
Mixed

One of the better-supported hair supplements, with a transparent label and a sensible biotin dose, at a lower monthly cost than Nutrafol. The evidence is still small and company-funded and there is no third-party certification, so treat it as a three-to-six-month experiment alongside a proper diagnosis.

Why we like it

  • AminoMar marine complex (1,072 mg) with trial data
  • Favorable mention in a 2023 JAMA Dermatology systematic review
  • Full label disclosure with modest 240 mcg biotin

Keep in mind

  • No named third-party certification
  • Trials are small and company-funded

2Best for Tested AthletesHair, Skin & Nails
Nutrafol Women Hair Growth Nutraceutical 120-capsule bottle

Nutrafol Women is the most credible of the heavily marketed hair supplements: NSF Certified for Sport, dermatologist-endorsed and supported by a controlled trial of its original formula. But it costs about $1,000 a year, hides doses in proprietary blends, and its new biotin-free formula has less published evidence. Get a diagnosis first, and try it for six months only if the budget allows.

NSF Certified for Sport

Why we like it

  • NSF Certified for Sport (brand and NSF listings)
  • Biotin-free, so no biotin-related lab test interference from this product
  • Controlled trial of the original formula and a favorable 2023 systematic review

Keep in mind

  • $88 per month, among the most expensive supplements in any category
  • Ingredients sit in proprietary complexes without individual doses

3Hair, Skin & Nails
Front of OLLY Undeniable Beauty 60-gummy bottle, Grapefruit Glam flavor
6.8
Mixed

Undeniable Beauty is one of the better-made beauty gummies: NSF certified, fully disclosed and widely liked for its taste. But it relies on the same high-dose biotin as cheaper rivals, and its 50 mg of keratin is a fraction of the studied amount. Think of it as a pleasant daily habit, not a fix for thinning hair.

NSF Contents Certified

Why we like it

  • Certified to NSF/ANSI 173, so label contents are verified and contaminants screened
  • Fully disclosed label, including the 50 mg keratin dose
  • Natural-source vitamin E and no synthetic flavors or colors

Keep in mind

  • Biotin at 8,333% DV has little evidence of benefit unless you are deficient
  • Keratin dose is one-tenth of the 500 mg used in a published solubilized-keratin trial

4Best ValueHair, Skin & Nails
Front of Nature's Bounty Optimal Solutions Hair, Skin & Nails Gummies 80-count bottle

A cheap, pleasant-tasting and fully disclosed biotin gummy that delivers exactly what its label says. The problem is the premise: for most people without a deficiency, 2,500 mcg of biotin is unlikely to change hair, skin or nails. Buy it as a low-cost experiment if you like, and tell your clinician before any blood test.

Why we like it

  • About $0.19 per daily serving for the 80-count bottle
  • Fully disclosed label with no proprietary blend
  • 4.6-star average across 70,000+ buyer ratings, with frequent praise for the taste

Keep in mind

  • Biotin at 8,333% DV has little evidence of benefit unless you are deficient
  • No named third-party certification such as USP or NSF

FAQ

Does biotin really help hair growth?
For most people, probably not. Biotin supplements may help people with a true biotin deficiency or conditions such as brittle nail syndrome, but a 2017 review found that every reported case of improvement involved an underlying deficiency or condition and concluded there is not enough evidence to recommend biotin for healthy people. If your diet is varied, a biotin gummy is unlikely to change your hair.
Can biotin supplements affect blood tests?
Yes. Many laboratory immunoassays use biotin-streptavidin chemistry, and excess biotin in the blood can push results falsely high or low. In a 2017 JAMA study of healthy adults, 10 mg of biotin a day for a week interfered with 9 of 23 biotin-based assays for hormones and other markers. The FDA has also received reports of falsely low troponin results. Tell your clinician about any biotin you take before blood work.
How long do hair, skin and nail supplements take to work?
Plan on at least three months of daily use before judging. Hair grows slowly, and the controlled trials behind products such as Viviscal and Nutrafol measured results after three to six months. Take monthly photos in the same lighting, keep other routines steady, and consider stopping if nothing has changed after six months, especially with the more expensive formulas.
Are hair, skin and nail gummies safe?
For healthy adults at label doses they appear generally safe: the 2023 JAMA Dermatology review found that adverse effects were rare and mild across the hair-loss supplements it evaluated. Practical concerns include biotin's lab-test interference, added sugar in gummies, gelatin or marine ingredients for people with dietary restrictions or allergies, and doubling up on biotin or zinc when combining products. Check with a clinician if pregnant, nursing or taking medication.
Why do some hair supplements cost ten times more than others?
Premium formulas such as Nutrafol and Viviscal combine several ingredients, such as marine protein, botanicals, zinc and antioxidants, and have company-funded randomized trials behind them, which the 2023 JAMA Dermatology review rated among the better evidence for hair supplements. Budget gummies cost a fraction as much but rely mainly on biotin. Neither group has large independent trials, so a higher price buys more evidence, not guaranteed results.
