Pros and cons

Black Edition

  • 40 g plant protein and 11 g fiber per 400-calorie serving

  • Only 3 g added sugar; sweetened with stevia
  • Around $3.53 per meal one-time, less on subscription
  • Brand reports routine third-party testing for heavy metals and pesticides
  • Taste and thick texture are frequent complaints
  • Contains green tea extract and cocoa, so a small amount of caffeine
  • No product-level certification such as NSF for Sport
  • High potassium and phosphorus per serving may not suit everyone

Organic Nutrition Shake

  • USDA Organic, with grass-fed milk and whey protein
  • 250 calories plus 20 vitamins and minerals, closer to a light meal than most protein shakes
  • No artificial sweeteners, carrageenan or soy ingredients

  • About $2.13 a shake when we checked
  • Only 16 g protein and 1 g fiber per 250-calorie shake

  • Not considered suitable for lactose intolerance, per Orgain
  • Nutrition panel shown only as an image on the brand site; some buyers report lumpy or curdled cartons

Our verdicts

Black Edition

Huel Black Edition is one of the most complete and transparent meal powders you can buy, with 40 g of protein, real fiber and a full disclosed panel at a reasonable price per meal. Its weak spot is drinkability, not nutrition, so buy a single bag or variety box before committing to a subscription.

Organic Nutrition Shake

Orgain's Organic Nutrition Shake is one of the few best-selling shakes actually designed to stand in for a light meal, with 250 calories, a broad vitamin and mineral blend and USDA Organic ingredients. Its 16 g of protein and 1 g of fiber are modest, and it relies on cane sugar and rice syrup for sweetness. Buy it on Amazon, where it was far cheaper than on Orgain's own site when we checked.
