Independent rankings — brands can’t pay for placement. How we score
1Best OverallMeal Replacements & Shakes
Front of Huel Black Edition Chocolate 17-meal bag
8.1
Good

Huel Black Edition is one of the most complete and transparent meal powders you can buy, with 40 g of protein, real fiber and a full disclosed panel at a reasonable price per meal. Its weak spot is drinkability, not nutrition, so buy a single bag or variety box before committing to a subscription.

Third-party tested

Why we like it

  • 40 g plant protein and 11 g fiber per 400-calorie serving
  • Complete nutrition panel and ingredient list published for every flavor
  • Only 3 g added sugar; sweetened with stevia

Keep in mind

  • Taste and thick texture are frequent complaints
  • Contains green tea extract and cocoa, so a small amount of caffeine

2Best ValueMeal Replacements & Shakes
Premier Protein 30g High Protein Shake, Chocolate, 11.5 fl oz bottle

Premier Protein

30g High Protein Shake

7.6
Good

Premier Protein is one of the cheapest and best-liked ways to add 30 g of protein to your day. As a meal replacement it falls short, since 160 calories with almost no carbohydrate, fat or fiber is a snack rather than a meal, so pair it with real food. The lack of third-party certification and co-manufacturer recalls in 2022 and 2023 keep its quality score in check.

Why we like it

  • 30 g of complete milk protein for 160 calories
  • About $2 per shake in an Amazon 12-pack
  • 1 g sugar and 0 g added sugar, 3-4 g carbohydrate

Keep in mind

  • Only 160 calories and 0-2 g fiber, so not a complete meal
  • No third-party certification such as NSF Certified for Sport

3Meal Replacements & Shakes
fairlife Core Power 26g Chocolate High Protein Milk Shake, 12-pack of 14 oz bottles

Core Power is one of the best-tasting ways to get 26 g of real milk protein with no added sugar and no lactose. It is a recovery shake rather than a meal, so treat it as a protein boost alongside food, or choose the 42 g Elite if you want something more filling. Expect to pay roughly double Premier Protein's price per gram of protein.

Kosher

Why we like it

  • 26 g of protein concentrated from milk (about 80% casein, 20% whey)
  • Lactose-free, gluten-free and kosher, according to fairlife
  • No added sugar; 5 g of naturally occurring sugar

Keep in mind

  • 170 calories and 2 g fiber make it a recovery snack, not a meal
  • About $3.49-$3.92 per bottle, roughly twice Premier Protein's cost per gram of protein

4Meal Replacements & Shakes
Front of Ka'Chava All-In-One Nutrition Shake Chocolate 15-serving bag

Ka'Chava is one of the best-tasting plant-based meal shakes, with good protein, fiber and vitamin coverage per serving. But you are paying a premium for a long superfood list whose doses are undisclosed, and 240 calories is light for a meal. Huel Black Edition delivers more protein and calories per dollar; choose Ka'Chava if flavor is what keeps you consistent.

Third-party testedcGMP facility

Why we like it

  • 25 g plant protein and 6 g fiber per serving
  • Broad vitamin and mineral coverage (25-250% DV for most)
  • Sweetened with monk fruit; no stevia or artificial sweeteners

Keep in mind

  • About $4.66 per serving at the one-time price
  • Superfood, adaptogen and probiotic amounts are not disclosed

5Meal Replacements & Shakes
Front of Orgain Organic Nutrition Shake, Creamy Chocolate Fudge, 11 fl oz carton

Orgain's Organic Nutrition Shake is one of the few best-selling shakes actually designed to stand in for a light meal, with 250 calories, a broad vitamin and mineral blend and USDA Organic ingredients. Its 16 g of protein and 1 g of fiber are modest, and it relies on cane sugar and rice syrup for sweetness. Buy it on Amazon, where it was far cheaper than on Orgain's own site when we checked.

USDA OrganicKosher

Why we like it

  • USDA Organic, with grass-fed milk and whey protein
  • 250 calories plus 20 vitamins and minerals, closer to a light meal than most protein shakes
  • No artificial sweeteners, carrageenan or soy ingredients

Keep in mind

  • Only 16 g protein and 1 g fiber per 250-calorie shake
  • Sweetened with cane sugar and brown rice syrup, so it contains added sugar

6Meal Replacements & Shakes
OWYN Dark Chocolate 20g plant protein shake, 12 fl oz bottle

OWYN is a clean, allergen-friendly vegan shake that avoids artificial sweeteners and is well liked for its smooth texture. But its plant protein scores lower on quality than dairy, it adds 4 g of cane sugar, and at 180 calories with little vitamin or mineral content it is a snack rather than a meal. Choose it for dietary restrictions rather than for value.

Non-GMO Project VerifiedKosher

Why we like it

  • Free from the top nine allergens, including dairy, soy and gluten
  • Non-GMO Project Verified and OU kosher
  • No artificial sweeteners or sugar alcohols (cane sugar and monk fruit)

Keep in mind

  • 20 g of protein counts as only 24% DV after FDA's protein-quality correction
  • 4 g of added cane sugar per bottle

FAQ

Do meal replacement shakes help with weight loss?
They can, as part of a structured plan. A 2019 meta-analysis of randomized trials found that programs using meal replacements led to more weight loss at one year than comparison diets, and the difference grew with more support. The shakes work by making portions predictable, so they only help if they replace food; drinking one on top of your usual meals simply adds calories.
How many meals a day can I replace?
Partial replacement usually means swapping one or two meals a day for a shake while keeping at least one regular meal. Replacing every meal with a low-calorie formula, known as total diet replacement, has been used successfully in research such as the DiRECT diabetes trial, but under close medical supervision that included stopping some medications. Talk to a clinician before trying it.
What is the difference between a protein shake and a meal replacement?
A protein shake is built around protein: Premier Protein has 30 g in 160 calories, and its label says to use it as a food supplement rather than for weight reduction. A meal replacement adds enough calories, carbohydrate, fat, fiber and micronutrients to stand in for food; Huel Black Edition, for example, has about 400 calories, 40 g of protein and 9 to 11 g of fiber depending on flavor.
Are ready-to-drink shakes as good as powders?
Nutritionally they can be similar, but they trade flexibility for convenience. Ready-to-drink shakes are shelf-stable and portable, yet you cannot adjust their calories, and many contain thickeners such as carrageenan or gums. Powders let you change the calories by mixing with water, milk, fruit or nut butter, and several complete meal products are sold mainly as powders.
Who should be careful with meal replacement shakes?
Check with a clinician first if you have kidney disease, since some shakes are high in protein, potassium or phosphorus, or if you take diabetes medication, because cutting calories and carbohydrates quickly can require dose changes. People with a milk allergy should avoid dairy-based shakes, and anyone pregnant, breastfeeding, under 18 or with a history of eating disorders should get individual advice.
