Our verdict
C4 Original is a sensible pick if you mainly want a caffeine boost in a flavor you will enjoy at roughly $1 a serving. Beyond the caffeine, its key ingredients are under-dosed or hidden in a proprietary blend, so it will not match fully dosed pre-workouts for pumps or endurance. Drug-tested athletes should choose the NSF-certified C4 Sport instead.

C4 Original is Cellucor's flagship pre-workout and one of the most widely stocked in the US. The current "5th Gen" formula raises caffeine to 200 mg per scoop (the previous version had 150 mg) and pairs it with 2 g of CarnoSyn beta-alanine, a Velox citrulline-arginine blend, 1 g of creatine nitrate (NO3-T), 100 mg of PeptiPump lentil peptides and a small amount of huperzine A, plus vitamin B6, B12, folate and choline.
On the label, caffeine does most of the work. Beta-alanine at 2 g falls short of the 3.2–6.4 g per day used in most studies, and because it works by slowly raising muscle carnosine, it only matters with daily use. Citrulline and arginine share a 4.5 g proprietary blend with the beta-alanine and peptides, which leaves roughly 2.4 g for both combined — well short of the 6–8 g of citrulline typically studied for blood flow and training volume. The 1 g of creatine nitrate is far below the 3–5 g of creatine monohydrate that research supports, and PeptiPump and huperzine have limited human data.
That blend structure means individual citrulline and arginine amounts are not disclosed. C4 Original is also not third-party certified; within the C4 family it is the Sport line that carries NSF Certified for Sport.
Where C4 Original earns its popularity is price, flavor and availability. Buyers consistently praise the taste and easy mixing, and the moderate stimulant load suits beginners. Note that Amazon still lists the older 150 mg formula separately, so check the caffeine figure before you buy.
