The Best Pre-Workout of 2026

We scored 8 pre-workout products on efficacy, purity, value, experience and transparency — then read the labels, checked the certifications and watched the creator reviews so you don’t have to. Here’s how they rank.

Independent rankings — brands can’t pay for placement. How we score
1Best OverallPre-Workout
Front of Transparent Labs BULK Pre-Workout Blue Raspberry 30-serving tub

Transparent Labs

BULK Pre-Workout

8.5
Excellent

BULK is one of the best-formulated and most trustworthy pre-workouts available: clinical doses, published test results and a moderate caffeine load that suits daily training. The stevia-sweetened flavors are its main weakness, so expect a stronger, less candy-like taste than mainstream brands.

Informed Choice

Why we like it

  • Clinical doses of citrulline malate (8 g), beta-alanine (4 g) and betaine (2.5 g)
  • Moderate 200 mg natural caffeine paired with 200 mg L-theanine
  • Informed Choice certified (per the brand) with published third-party COAs

Keep in mind

  • Stevia-sweetened flavors are divisive; several reviewers call it hard to drink
  • About $1.67 per serving, more than mass-market pre-workouts

2Most TransparentPre-Workout
Front of Legion Pulse Pre-Workout Blue Raspberry 20-serving tub
8.3
Good

Pulse is an excellent choice for experienced lifters who want clinically dosed ingredients, independent lab testing and no artificial sweeteners. The 350 mg caffeine serving is strong, so most people should start with one scoop, and the regular price is high unless you catch a sale.

Third-party testedcGMP facility

Why we like it

  • Clinical doses of citrulline malate (8 g), beta-alanine (3.6 g) and betaine (2.5 g)
  • 1:1 caffeine to L-theanine ratio for smoother energy
  • Naturally sweetened (stevia, erythritol) with no artificial dyes

Keep in mind

  • 350 mg caffeine per full serving is too strong for many people
  • About $2.50 per full serving at the regular price

3Pre-Workout
Front of Gorilla Mode pre-workout Cherry Blackout tub
8.2
Good

Gorilla Mode delivers what it promises for experienced users: big pump, hydration and focus doses with unusually open lab testing. Most people should treat one scoop as the serving, because the two-scoop maximum reaches 400 mg of caffeine and leaves no room for coffee or other stimulants that day.

Third-party tested

Why we like it

  • Pure L-citrulline (5 g per scoop, 10 g at the maximum) rather than citrulline malate
  • Includes creatine (2.5 g per scoop) plus glycerol and salt for pumps and hydration
  • Lot-specific Eurofins test results published for every active ingredient

Keep in mind

  • Two scoops deliver 400 mg of caffeine, the FDA's daily reference amount for healthy adults
  • No beta-alanine

4Pre-Workout
Front of GHOST Legend V4 Pre-Workout Blue Raspberry 30-serving tub

Legend V4 is one of the better-formulated mainstream pre-workouts: its core ingredients are at research-backed doses, the label is fully transparent, and the flavors are a genuine draw. The 300 mg caffeine dose is too strong for beginners and late-day training, and there is no verified sport certification, so tested athletes should look elsewhere.

Why we like it

  • Clinical doses of L-citrulline (6 g), beta-alanine (3.2 g) and betaine (2.5 g)
  • Fully transparent label with no proprietary blends
  • Popular licensed flavors (Welch's, Sonic, Warheads, Sour Strips); listed as vegan, gluten-free, soy-free and sugar-free by GNC

Keep in mind

  • 300 mg caffeine plus 100 mg theobromine per scoop is too much for many people
  • No third-party certification could be verified for Legend V4

5Best for Tested AthletesPre-Workout
Front of Kaged Pre-Workout (Pre-Kaged) Strawberry Lemonade 20-serving tub

Pre-Kaged is one of the safest choices for tested athletes, pairing batch-level Informed Sport certification with solid caffeine, citrulline and betaine doses. Its beta-alanine and creatine fall short of research doses and the price is on the high side, so non-competitive lifters can get more per dollar elsewhere.

Informed Sport

Why we like it

  • Informed Sport certified, with every batch tested according to Kaged
  • 274 mg natural caffeine, 6.5 g L-citrulline and 2.5 g betaine per scoop
  • Vegan, naturally flavored, no artificial colors and 1 g of sugar

Keep in mind

  • Only 1.6 g beta-alanine and 1.5 g creatine HCl, both below research doses
  • 6.5 g of BCAAs adds bulk with little benefit if your protein intake is adequate

6Best ValuePre-Workout
Front of RYSE Loaded Pre Airheads Cherry 30-serving tub
7.9
Good

Loaded Pre is effective and great-tasting, which explains its huge TikTok Shop following. Its main problem is inconsistency: caffeine and some doses vary by flavor and formula version, so check the tub before you scoop, never exceed one scoop, and choose a certified product if you are drug-tested.

Why we like it

  • 4.5 g L-citrulline and about 3.2–3.5 g beta-alanine per scoop
  • More than 20 licensed and original flavors
  • Large buyer base: 4.7 stars from 8,000+ reviews on RYSE's TikTok Shop listing

Keep in mind

  • Caffeine varies from 300 to 390 mg per scoop depending on flavor
  • Several formula versions sold at once; facts panels published only as images

7Most ViralPre-Workout
Front of Alani Nu Pre-Workout Hawaiian Shaved Ice 30-serving tub

Alani Nu

Pre-Workout

7.5
Good

Alani Nu Pre-Workout is a pleasant, moderate-stimulant option for beginners and casual lifters who care most about taste. Its caffeine-theanine combination works, but beta-alanine and tyrosine are under-dosed and there is no third-party certification, so serious lifters and tested athletes can do better.

Why we like it

  • 200 mg caffeine balanced with 200 mg L-theanine
  • Fully disclosed label with no proprietary blends and 0 g sugar
  • Popular flavors; 4.4 stars from nearly 8,800 buyer reviews

Keep in mind

  • Beta-alanine (1.6 g) and L-tyrosine (500 mg) are well below research doses
  • Citrulline malate (6 g) sits at the low end of the studied range

8Pre-Workout
Front of C4 Original Pre-Workout Icy Blue Razz 30-serving tub
6.8
Mixed

C4 Original is a sensible pick if you mainly want a caffeine boost in a flavor you will enjoy at roughly $1 a serving. Beyond the caffeine, its key ingredients are under-dosed or hidden in a proprietary blend, so it will not match fully dosed pre-workouts for pumps or endurance. Drug-tested athletes should choose the NSF-certified C4 Sport instead.

Why we like it

  • 200 mg caffeine per scoop is a meaningful, well-studied dose
  • Zero sugar, and Cellucor says the core flavors use no artificial colors
  • About $1.17 per serving at list price ($34.99 for 30), less with Cellucor's subscription discount

Keep in mind

  • Beta-alanine (2 g), citrulline + arginine (about 2.4 g combined) and creatine nitrate (1 g) are all below clinically studied doses
  • 4.5 g proprietary blend hides the individual citrulline and arginine amounts

FAQ

Do pre-workouts actually work?
The caffeine in them does: research consistently shows that caffeine improves strength, endurance and power for many people, and it also sharpens alertness. Other ingredients vary. Beta-alanine helps high-intensity efforts with daily use, while evidence for citrulline and most nootropic add-ins is weaker. A well-dosed pre-workout can help you train harder, but it won't replace sleep, food or a good program.
How much caffeine is too much in a pre-workout?
The FDA cites about 400 mg a day as an amount not generally associated with negative effects in healthy adults, and that total includes coffee, tea and energy drinks. Many pre-workouts contain 200–400 mg per serving, so one scoop can use most of that budget. Start with half a serving, avoid stacking stimulants, and leave several hours between your last dose and bedtime.
Why does pre-workout make my skin tingle?
The pins-and-needles feeling, called paresthesia, is caused by beta-alanine. It is harmless and usually fades within an hour. The International Society of Sports Nutrition notes that splitting beta-alanine into smaller doses or using a sustained-release form reduces it. If it bothers you, try half a scoop or choose a product with less beta-alanine.
Should I take pre-workout every day?
You can, but it is often unnecessary. Beta-alanine and creatine work through daily saturation, whereas caffeine's benefit is immediate and tolerance builds with daily use. Many lifters save stimulant pre-workouts for demanding sessions, use a stimulant-free product or plain creatine on other days, and take periodic breaks from caffeine. Always stay within your daily caffeine limit.
Who should avoid pre-workout supplements?
People who are pregnant or breastfeeding, under 18, sensitive to caffeine, or living with heart conditions, high blood pressure, anxiety or sleep problems should avoid stimulant pre-workouts or talk to a clinician first. Ingredients can also interact with medications, including stimulants and some antidepressants. Drug-tested athletes should only use products certified by NSF or Informed Sport.
