An allergen-friendly vegan shake with 20 g of pea and pumpkin seed protein and no artificial sweeteners, but lower-quality protein and too few calories for a meal.

Amazon's best-selling protein shake: 30 g of milk protein for 160 calories at about $2 a shake, but too light to replace a full meal on its own.

Our verdict
Premier Protein is one of the cheapest and best-liked ways to add 30 g of protein to your day. As a meal replacement it falls short, since 160 calories with almost no carbohydrate, fat or fiber is a snack rather than a meal, so pair it with real food. The lack of third-party certification and co-manufacturer recalls in 2022 and 2023 keep its quality score in check.

Premier Protein's 30g High Protein Shake is the top-selling ready-to-drink protein shake on Amazon, where the Chocolate 12-pack ranked #1 in Protein Drinks and #4 in all of Grocery & Gourmet Food when we checked. Each shake delivers 30 g of protein from milk protein concentrate and calcium caseinate for 160 calories, with 3 g of fat, 3 to 4 g of carbohydrate and 1 g of sugar. It is sweetened with sucralose and acesulfame potassium, and a vitamin and mineral blend adds 24 nutrients, including 50% of the Daily Value for calcium and 30% for vitamin D.
Many people drink it in place of breakfast or lunch, but it works better as a high-protein snack or meal add-on than as a complete meal. At 160 calories, with little fat and 0 g (vanilla) to 2 g (chocolate) of fiber, it supplies far less energy than a typical meal, and the label itself says to use it as a food supplement only and not for weight reduction. Pairing a shake with fruit, oats or toast makes a more balanced meal.
Milk proteins are complete and casein-rich, which suits satiety, and Premier publishes the full nutrition panel and ingredient list for every flavor. There is no third-party certification such as NSF Certified for Sport, and FDA records show two recalls tied to co-manufacturers: specific 11 oz carton lots made by Lyons Magnus in 2022 (Class I, potential microbial contamination) and a limited-edition Winter Mint Chocolate bottle in 2023 (Class II, processing specifications).
Value is the standout: a 12-pack sold for $23.97, about $2 a shake. Buyers consistently praise the taste and say it keeps them full between meals, while opinions on consistency are split.
