Premier Protein
30g High Protein Shake
Amazon's best-selling protein shake: 30 g of milk protein for 160 calories at about $2 a shake, but too light to replace a full meal on its own.

An allergen-friendly vegan shake with 20 g of pea and pumpkin seed protein and no artificial sweeteners, but lower-quality protein and too few calories for a meal.

Our verdict
OWYN is a clean, allergen-friendly vegan shake that avoids artificial sweeteners and is well liked for its smooth texture. But its plant protein scores lower on quality than dairy, it adds 4 g of cane sugar, and at 180 calories with little vitamin or mineral content it is a snack rather than a meal. Choose it for dietary restrictions rather than for value.

OWYN, short for Only What You Need, makes one of the best-known vegan ready-to-drink shakes; the Dark Chocolate 12-pack ranked #15 in Protein Drinks on Amazon when we checked. A 12 fl oz bottle provides 180 calories, 20 g of protein from pea and organic pumpkin seed protein, 7 g of fat (with organic flax oil as an omega-3 source), 8 g of carbohydrate, 3 g of fiber and 4 g of added sugar from organic cane sugar, balanced with monk fruit. It contains no dairy, soy, gluten or artificial sweeteners, and OWYN says it is free from the top nine allergens.
The allergen profile and certifications are the main draw. The shakes are Non-GMO Project Verified and certified kosher by the Orthodox Union, and they stay shelf-stable for up to 18 months before opening. The full Nutrition Facts panel and ingredient list are published, although the amounts inside the protein blend are not.
Protein quality is the weak spot. FDA rules require the protein %Daily Value to be adjusted for protein quality, and OWYN lists its 20 g as 24% DV, equivalent to about 12 g of quality-corrected protein; Premier Protein lists 30 g of milk protein as 60%. Apart from 20% DV iron, the panel shows little in the way of vitamins or minerals, so at 180 calories this is a snack-sized drink rather than a meal replacement.
Buyers rate the Dark Chocolate 12-pack 4.4 out of 5 from more than 6,000 buyer ratings, praising the smooth, non-gritty texture and easy digestion, while some find it expensive. A 12-pack costs $38.99 direct, about $3.25 a bottle.
