Our verdict

Centrum Silver Women 50+ is a well-dosed, very inexpensive daily multivitamin for women over 50, with dependable vitamin D, B12 and iodine and the strongest trial pedigree of any drugstore brand. The memory benefits seen in COSMOS were small and came from the unisex Centrum Silver formula rather than this women's version, and the tablet has no third-party seal, little calcium and synthetic colors. It suits most women past menopause who want simple nutritional insurance, as long as they know it contains 8 mg of iron.

Best for

  • Women over 50 who want an inexpensive, comprehensive daily multi
  • Older adults who want dependable vitamin D and B12
  • Buyers who value large-trial research behind the formula family

Skip it if

  • Women told to avoid supplemental iron, such as those with an iron-overload condition
  • Anyone avoiding synthetic dyes (Red 40, Blue 2) or titanium dioxide
  • Shoppers who require USP or NSF certification

Our review

Centrum Silver Women 50+ is the women's version of the drugstore multivitamin behind the largest multivitamin trials, and it covers the basics well for women past menopause. One smooth-coated tablet supplies 24 vitamins and minerals plus lutein, including 1,000 IU of vitamin D3 (above the 600 to 800 IU RDA), 50 mcg of vitamin B12, 150 mcg of iodine, 400 mcg of folic acid and 15 mg of zinc. Supplemental B12 is not bound to food protein, so older adults who absorb B12 poorly from food generally absorb it normally. It also contains 8 mg of iron, the RDA for women over 50, so it is low-iron rather than iron-free.

The research is its selling point, with caveats. In COSMOS, one Centrum Silver tablet given to both men and women did not lower cancer, cardiovascular events or deaths over 3.6 years, but three cognitive substudies found small gains in memory and global cognition that a pooled analysis equated to about two years less cognitive aging. Effects were modest, participants were mostly white, and the women's formula itself was not tested. The earlier Physicians' Health Study II, in men, found 8 percent fewer cancers but no heart or memory benefit, and the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force still calls the evidence insufficient to weigh multivitamins for heart disease or cancer prevention.

The trade-offs: 300 mg of calcium covers only a quarter of the 1,200 mg women over 50 need, selenium is just 22 mcg, and the tablet is colored with Red 40 Lake, Blue 2 Lake and titanium dioxide. There is no USP or NSF certification. At $20.12 for 200 tablets at Walmart, it costs about 10 cents a day. Buyers mostly call it easy to swallow, though some find the tablet large or report nausea.

Pros & cons

What we like

  • About 10 cents a day for 24 vitamins and minerals plus lutein
  • 1,000 IU vitamin D3 and 50 mcg vitamin B12, both useful after 50
  • 8 mg iron matches the RDA for women over 50, and 150 mcg iodine is included
  • Same product family tested in COSMOS and the Physicians' Health Study II

Watch-outs

  • No USP or NSF third-party certification
  • Only 300 mg calcium (23% DV) and 22 mcg selenium
  • Colored with Red 40 Lake, Blue 2 Lake and titanium dioxide
  • The memory claim rests on small effects seen with the unisex Centrum Silver formula

Questions buyers ask

Is Centrum Silver Women 50+ iron-free?
No. Each tablet contains 8 mg of iron (44% DV), which equals the RDA for women over 50, so it is a low-iron formula rather than an iron-free one. Women with an iron-overload condition, or who have been told to avoid supplemental iron, should ask a clinician before using it. As with any iron-containing supplement, keep it out of children's reach.
Is it proven to support memory?
The evidence comes from the COSMOS trials, which gave a Centrum Silver tablet to adults 60 and older. A pooled analysis of three substudies found small gains in memory and overall cognition, roughly two years less cognitive aging, but no drop in new cases of mild cognitive impairment or dementia over three years. The Women's 50+ formula itself was not studied, and individual results may not be noticeable.
How much calcium does it provide?
Only 300 mg, or 23% of the Daily Value, while women over 50 need 1,200 mg a day. Dairy, fortified plant milks, canned fish with soft bones and leafy greens can supply the rest. If you add a calcium supplement, check your total intake with a clinician, and take this tablet with food as the label directs.
